Abstract

This study assessed the implementation of social support and home healthcare service modules among healthcare workers in registered gerontology homes in Ibadan Metropolis, Oyo State, Nigeria. The objectives were to determine the extent to which healthcare workers provide social support services and to evaluate their implementation of home healthcare modules. A descriptive quantitative research design was adopted, targeting all 83 healthcare workers in the selected gerontology homes through total enumeration. A purposive sampling technique ensured that only those with relevant experience in elderly care were included. Data were collected using a validated semi-structured questionnaire divided into three sections: socio-demographic characteristics, implementation of social support services, and home healthcare service modules. Items in sections B and C were rated on a 5-point Likert scale. Data were analysed using SPSS version 25, with descriptive statistics presented in tables. Findings revealed a generally moderate level of implementation of social support services. While healthcare workers actively encouraged elderly participation in recreational activities and advocated for social programme inclusion, routine social needs assessments, collaboration with family members, and interdisciplinary support were notably weak. Likewise, the implementation of home healthcare service modules was also moderate to low. Although training on assistive devices and caregiver education received relatively high scores, adherence to home care protocols, environmental safety assessments, and coordinated interdisciplinary care were poorly implemented. The results highlight the need for capacity building, institutional reform, and policy-level commitment to improve elderly care delivery. Enhancing training, standardising protocols, and promoting interdisciplinary collaboration are essential for ensuring holistic and person-centred care for the elderly in Ibadan
